A Cry In The Storm

"A Cry in the Storm"

Psalm 107:28 (NLT)

“Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.

He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor!

Life is filled with storms: unexpected challenges, trials, and difficulties that threaten to overwhelm us. In the midst of these storms, it's easy to feel lost and powerless. Psalm 107:28 captures a universal truth: in times of trouble, the natural response is to cry out for help. In verses 25-29 it states that sailors were helpless in the storm. They had no control over the movements of their ship. But they “cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.” They could not rely on their own strength, but they trusted in the power of the Lord.

Consider the situation of the sailors; a desperate cry rising above the howling winds of distress. It is a honest plea, acknowledging their need for something greater than themselves. In our vulnerability, we too turn to the One who has the power to calm the storm. The beauty lies not only in the act of crying out but in the assurance of the response. The Lord, ever faithful and compassionate, hears our cries. He does not turn a deaf ear to our pleas; instead, He responds with deliverance. Just as a loving parent rush to comfort a frightened child, God reaches out to bring us out of our distress. God’s Word does not say we will not experience “the valley of the shadow of death,” but it does promise that God is with us (Psalm 23:4). God does not ignore the cries of his people; he hears us in our distress. As His children we should know how to trust Him in difficult times.

As we navigate life's storms, let Psalm 107:28 serve as a reminder of the power of prayer and the faithfulness of our God. Our cries do not fall on deaf ears; they reach the heart of a God who cares deeply for His children. In our moments of distress, may we find comfort in turning to Him, trusting that His deliverance is not only possible but promised. The Psalmist reminds us that, no matter how Dreadful our circumstances may seem, we can turn to God in faith, trusting in His ability to hear our cries and bring relief.

God you are my refuge and strength, a present help in times of trouble. Thank you for the assurance that when I call on You, You hear and deliver me from distress.
