Living Out Your
Calling
Scripture:
Ephesians 4:1-3 (NIV)
"As a
prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling
you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with
one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through
the bond of peace."
In Ephesians 4:1-3, the apostle Paul writing from
prison addresses the believers with a heartfelt plea to live lives that reflect
the profound calling they have received from God. This calling is not just
about a specific ministry or task but of guidance for how we should conduct
ourselves in our daily lives. Understanding our calling begins with recognizing
our identity in Christ and flows into how we live daily.
Paul provides
practical guidance on what it looks like to live out our calling. Recognize
that all we are and have is by God’s grace. To live a life of humility,
recognizing our own limitations and the value of others. It is not thinking
less of ourselves but thinking of ourselves less. In a world that often prizes
self-promotion and pride, humility stands out as a mark of genuine Christian
character. It allows us to serve others selflessly and to acknowledge our need
for God’s grace
Paul also encourages gentleness and patience.
Gentleness, or meekness, is often misunderstood as weakness. However, it is
strength under control. It is the ability to respond with kindness and grace,
even when provoked. Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit and reflects the heart
of Jesus, who was gentle and humble in heart (Matthew 11:29). Patience involves
enduring difficult circumstances and people without becoming angry or
frustrated. It reflects our trust in God’s timing and purposes.
We are encouraged
to bear with one another in love: This means accepting and forgiving each
other’s faults and weaknesses. Love is the glue that holds relationships
together. We are called to strive for peace and unity within the body of
Christ. This requires effort, forgiveness, and a commitment to maintaining
harmony despite differences. Living out our calling is about reflecting Christ
in our character and relationships. It is about making daily choices that honor
God and serve others.
Reflect on whether
your daily life reflects the calling you have received from God. Are there
areas where you need to grow in humility, gentleness, or patience? Spend time in
prayer and scripture to understand more deeply who you are in Christ and the
unique calling He has for you. Focus on developing humility, gentleness,
patience, and love in your interactions with others. Make a conscious effort to
promote peace and unity within your community, whether it is your church,
family, or workplace.
