Called Out Of and Into

Called Out Of and Into

1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

In 1 Peter 2:9, Peter reminds us of our dual identity as followers of Christ: to be "called out" of darkness and into God's marvelous light, with the purpose of declaring His praises to the world. This call is not just about individual salvation, but about entering a new identity in Christ, as part of a royal, holy community that exists to reflect God’s glory.

When we were called out, we were rescued from darkness. This "darkness" can represent a multitude of things: sin, confusion, ignorance, despair, and separation from God. The darkness is not just the absence of light, but a place where truth is hidden, and lives are trapped in the shadows of brokenness. Jesus is the one who made it possible by taking on our darkness at the cross. We were blind, but now we see, we were lost, but now we are found. This is a profound transformation that goes beyond our circumstances, it touches our very nature. This call is a call to remember the depth of the grace we have received. It is an invitation to leave behind anything that once kept us in bondage.

We are not just called out of something; we are called into something far greater, God’s wonderful light. Light in Scripture symbolizes God’s presence, truth, holiness, and the revelation of who He is. As God's special possession, we are called into His marvelous light, to experience His goodness, to walk in His truth, and to shine His light into the world. Being called into the light means that our lives are now defined by the light of Christ. We are no longer wandering aimlessly or walking in the shadows of sin and uncertainty. Jesus brought us into a relationship with the Father, shedding His light into the deepest parts of our hearts

The ultimate purpose of being called out of darkness and into light is to declare the praises of Him who called us. Our new identity in Christ is to live in such a way that our lives become a testimony to God’s greatness. When people see us living in the light, they should be drawn to God who transformed us. Our actions, words, and hearts should all be an ongoing praise of God’s mercy and power.

Take a moment today to reflect on where God has called you from, what darkness you were once in, and how He has rescued you. Thank Him for the light He has brought into your life through Jesus.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for calling me out of darkness and into Your marvelous light. Thank You for the grace that has transformed my life. Help me to live as a reflection of Your light, and may my life be a continual declaration of Your goodness and mercy. May others see Your light in me and be drawn to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
