Love That Chooses to Forgive
Love
That Chooses to Forgive
“Love
prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.”
Proverbs
17:9 reminds us that love is strengthened when we choose forgiveness rather
than continually reopening old wounds. God has entrusted us with precious
relationships, and every relationship, whether in families, friendships,
marriages, or church communities, requires grace and forgiveness to endure.
Hurt is inevitable. Words may sometimes wound, and mistakes will be made. Yet
love flourishes when we extend mercy instead of holding tightly to offenses.
To
forgive does not mean pretending the hurt never happened. It means deciding not
to allow the offense to poison the relationship or harden the heart. Love
covers faults with grace. It does not keep reopening old wounds or constantly
reminding others of their failures. When we continually dwell on wrongs,
resentment quietly builds walls between people who were once close.
Many
friendships and families have been divided, not because of one mistake, but
because the offense was rehearsed repeatedly. The enemy often works through
bitterness, replaying painful moments until trust and affection begin to fade.
But God calls us to a higher path, the path of mercy.
Jesus
showed us this kind of love. He forgave even those who wounded Him deeply.
Through His example, we learn that forgiveness is not weakness; it is strength
guided by grace. Forgiveness frees the heart from carrying burdens that were
never meant to remain there.
In
Jamaica, we often say, “Don’t carry feelings.” There is wisdom in that.
Carrying offense too long can rob us of peace and destroy precious
relationships. Love flourishes where grace is given room to grow.
Today,
ask the Lord to help you release any bitterness you may be holding. Let love
prosper by choosing forgiveness. Sometimes healing begins the moment we stop
replaying the hurt and start extending grace.
Moments
of Reflection
Is
there someone whose fault you keep revisiting in your heart? Ask God for the
strength to forgive fully and to walk in the freedom that forgiveness brings.
Love becomes stronger when mercy speaks louder than resentment.
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, teach me to love as You love. Help me not to dwell on offenses or hold
bitterness in my heart. Give me grace to forgive quickly and sincerely. Let my
relationships reflect Your mercy, peace, and compassion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Verse to Note
“Be
kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ
God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
